OSHC FAQ

What is OSHC?

OSHC stands for Overseas Student Health Cover which is a requirement of students who are undertaking studies in Australia using a study visa. Overseas Student Health Cover assists international students in meeting the costs of medical and hospital care that they may need while in Australia.

Who can use OSHC?

People who must take out OSHC are overseas students undertaking formal studies in Australia and their dependents (for example, spouses and children under 18 years old). OSHC is a requirement of The Department of Immigration and Border Protection for overseas students for the duration of time they are in Australia.

How can OSHC be used?

OSHC can be used to cover doctor’s visits, some hospital treatment, ambulance cover and some pharmaceuticals. OSHC is designed to be used in place of Medicare meaning that you do not find yourself out of pocket for healthcare. Depending on the cover that you choose, you may also be covered for extras.

Do we accept OSHC?

Here at A2Z Medical Centre, we accept OSHC for GP visits provided through AHM, Medibank and NIB, these funds cover online claiming so you don’t have to pay anything out of pocket on the day, however if you have another health fund you will be charged for the visit and provided an invoice in which you then take to your insurance provider where they reimburse you for your visit.

How do we use OSHC?

OSHC cover at A2Z Medical Centre is used in place of Medicare. In order for us to provide this service, we take your cover number and input the visit information into the online claiming system provided by your service provider which is then processed online. The online claiming system allows us to see the status of the claim and your eligibility to ensure that the claims have been processed correctly.  This means that you do not have to pay out of your own pocket to see the GP.
